I
went away from
that day with
wonderful memories. When I first pulled up to
The San Pedro House I was greeted by chirping Goldfinches. There were thistle and nectar feeders hanging out front to encourage
birds and allow for easy bird watching. I then headed
toward the San Pedro River on a winding
dirt pathway with tall weeds on either side. I heard massive rustling sounds of grasshoppers jumping out of the way
of my intrusive boots. I would stop and start walking and so would the sounds of the grasshoppers. I have always been a big tease! I wondered to myself why the abundance of grasshoppers didn't make
me freak? I decided that it was because they were jumping "away" from me. If a million grasshoppers had been jumping
on or at me I would have been back in the car! I continued down the pathway and stopped dead in my tracks when I saw
a beautiful bird in a little red jacket and black Zorro mask. It was the first time I had seen a Male Vermilion Flycatcher in the wild. What a thrill! I then approached the riverbank where birds where fluttering around
in the trees and bushes. I spent several hours watching grosbeaks, woodpeckers, finches, kingbirds, and the like, while hawks
lazily soared overhead. Stop by on your way through Southern Arizona and make your own memories
at The San Pedro River National Conservation Area.
